Unlike previous installments in the SWAT video game series, which followed LAPD SWAT officers through missions set in Los Angeles, California, the single-player campaign of SWAT 4 takes place in the fictional New England city of Fairview (a fictional locale loosely based on New York City), during the game's then-future of 2012 to 2013. During the single-player campaign, the player is tasked with leading a five-man police SWAT team, also known as an "element", through 60 missions. The player controls "Lead", a recent transferee and former LAPD SWAT officer with several years of service under his belt. In keeping with SWAT 4's goal of having gameplay simulating to a real police SWAT officer's experience, the missions are not related to each other and there is no overarching storyline.
